Bomethius

Jonathan Hodges leads Bomethius, a baroque pop project based right here in Chicago. His music, influenced by classical training, blends chamber rock akin to Andrew Bird and Elliott Smith.

Studio albums feature diverse guest contributors like Sam Ahmadi, Matt Shaw, Michael Minkoff, Ricky Roshell, Chris Stubblefield, and Jeff Tullis, while live performances often include Jeremiah de la Peña, Dan Kristan, and Taylor Vos. Together, they enhance Bomethius’ introspective themes and musical depth.

Bomethius' early albums, "Intimatitudes" and "As Roses," reflect Hodges’ poignant exploration of youth and identity, mixing confessional ballads with satirical reflections. The breakthrough "Sweet Nothings" (2019) expanded into blues and chamber rock styles, earning acclaim for its emotive storytelling. "inadiquit" (2020), a collaboration with Dave Hodges, delved into familial and religious themes with intricate baroque-pop arrangements.

"Seasons of Limbo" (2021) continued this narrative depth, highlighted by singles like "Tornados in Dallas" and "Goodbye, Covid-19," showcasing Hodges’ lyrical prowess and musical evolution.

Returning in 2022 with "Awful, Pompous, & Artificial (APA)," Bomethius explored estrangement and linguistic disconnection through a rich tapestry of sound. Supported by a broad ensemble, including Roshell, Stubblefield, Tullis, Ahmadi, and Minkoff, the album’s 13 tracks spanned intricate harmonies, synths, violins, and dynamic vocal performances.

Hodges’ musical journey is rooted in his violin expertise and collaborations across various genres, shaping a distinct voice within contemporary baroque pop.

With four singles released, Borrowed Time, Bomethius' 7th record in as many years, is slated for release in late 2024 through Oakley Avenue Records.
